12 Favorite Layouts from 2012

Here are mine:

 "Out of the Closet" tells the story of an ugly robe from the 1970's. When my husband finally decided to get rid of it in 2011, the girls pulled it out of the good will pile and gave it back to him for Christmas. I loved using the old button cards.

 "Big Mistake" is about how I dislike my new car. I crossed it with my grandparent's driveway in the 1940's---I had no idea who the cars belonged to. It was a fun way to use photos that I had no information about. I just imagined that while I was complaining about my "fancy schmancy" car, the owners of those old cars would love our modern conveniences like power everything and air conditioning. I did some straight line embroidering to form the grid pattern.

 "they call me GRAMMY"---by any other name...a fun page about my "grands."
"the Hairclip bush" is about a funny little trick I played on the girls when they were little. They still remember it.

 "Grandma Pierson" is a page about my adopted grandma. I took the photos from an early album that I had cut in to crazy shapes (remember when we did that?) I turned them in to flowers to make sense out of them. "Holy Grail" is about how Scrabble and Words with Friends are really different. I love to print my journaling on post it notes. They are so easy to run through the printer.

 "My Boy Steve Jobs"---I mourned him and had to pay tribute with a layout. Hexagons are all the rage and I love using them. I used the sewing machine with a red zigzag to hold them down.

 More hexagons "On the Town." A pretty simple layout without too much embellishment.

 "In the country" tells of my crazy grandmother and the fun we had visiting her. "Jealous of these two" is about my twin sisters and the bike I got for Christmas but couldn't ride due to a broken arm. My dad made me let them ride it first! Totally unfair!

 "These 2 sleep together" is about my friend, Pam. We take a lot of ribbing for sharing beds on our girl's trips. We're compatible roommates. It was a fun way to acknowledge our friendship.

 "Someone Like You" is my favorite song for 2012 by Adele. I had to find a way to commemorate it. A layout about my guy of 41 years was "it"! I used the sewing machine to sew on the hearts.

 "A day with my Peeps" is about hot summer days floating in the pool. I embroidered "Peeps" on a sunny yellow tag with an aqua thread.

 "one covered bridge after another" follows our drive through New England in the fall of 2012. I got the brown and red inspiration with the old Raleigh cigarette coupons I found on that trip.

"all 7 of us" is my favorite color combination of the year. I plan to use more yellow and grey this year. This layout was inspired by a pre-made sketch.

Another Great Christmas!

We had the best Christmas and everyone was WELL! Not even a sniffle---I hope I didn't just jinx us.

Before I launch in to our Christmas, I'm going to take it day-by-day leading up to it. The Lapps family arrived on Friday, December 21st. We decided to celebrate Jordan's 18th birthday then so they could be here. Her birthday is on the 18th so she didn't have to wait too long.

Just in time for the party, we got her graduation picture. We all think they turned our really good.

I just can't believe she's 18. The years have truly gone by in a blink of the eye. That's why I do what I do. I want to save all of the important stories for her and my other "grands." The pearls belong to her mother.

This was the casual shot. There were so many to choose from---it was hard to narrow down. You could get as many poses as you want, but the cost was crazy, so we stuck with just two. 

And once again, a straight "A" report card. The teacher comments always surprise us. She tends to be on the quiet side. Apparently, she really participates in class. I have noticed, if you talk about a subject that she's interested in, she becomes quite animated.

When you have a December birthday, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of the holidays. I was determined not to let that happen.

Notice I propped her picture up on the buffet. That way, we would be reminded that it was Jordan's day. With that in mind, I made all of her favorite foods---cheeseburgers with sweet potato fries, tater tots and fruit salad. For dessert, I made her a fudge pie that I served with peppermint ice cream.

After dinner, I had a family activity planned---just like any little kids birthday party. I got this idea from Pinterest. You make trees from ice cream cones and frosting. Add sprinkles and they turned out pretty cute. This is Spencer, Jordan's b-friend.

Right away, the kids wanted to know if it was a competition. I said, "no." But Butch jumped in and said "yes." He was to be the judge. The winner would get $5.00. He had to hide out in the kitchen while everyone worked. That worked for me---he cleaned up the whole thing! This is Carson, Morgan's b-friend sitting next to Stephanie.

Here are some of the results. I couldn't get over how creative they were.

The boyfriends, Carson (in front) and Spencer (in back), really got in to it. Carson has a bit of an edge. He's an art student at Nashville School of Art. He comes from a very artistic family.

Greg and Nicky did not participate. I did a couple ahead of time to see if they would "dry." They did. I just used canned frosting and dyed some of it.

And the winners are---Carson, Jordan and Stephanie. Each person made two. Both of Carson's and Jordan's were picked. It ended up costing Butch $25.00. Next time he won't be so eager to turn a family activity into a competition!

The winners all in a row. They were each so creative in the techniques the kids used.

I ended up using some of the trees to decorate a cookie tray I took to the family trivia party on Saturday night. They looked so cute. There were two little girls (sisters---Mela and Gretchen) that ate several of them and licked the rest. I'm sure their mother, Merrill had a hard time getting them to bed after that suar high!!

When everybody left on Thursday, it made me sad to throw them away. They really were so cute and fun to make. File that away (or pin them) for next year.

Les Miserables

All I've got to say is the only way they could make Les Mis any better would be for the film cast to play it on stage!!

Our original plan was to see it on Christmas day. We made the tactical error by not purchasing tickets online. We thought just getting there an hour ahead would be enough time. We were wrong. It was sold out. We found out that the tickets had actually gone on sale two weeks prior.

I had to take Jordan to get her wisdom teeth out yesterday. She didn't feel up to going today. I went with Morgan. I'll go again with the other girls whenever they want to go. I just couldn't wait---and besides, this was the only time Morgan could go. Now that she's a working girl, her time is limited. Plus, she leaves on Monday for a school trip to England, Ireland and Wales. Wish I was going!

The movie was incredible! Les Mis is my most favorite of all time. It was hard to keep myself from singing along---considering I know every lyric to every song. I cried several times. I will be happy to see it again on the big screen.

I have a lot to report about our holidays. I'm going to break it up in to several posts.

The sisters paid us their annual visit. Usually there are 3 or 4. This year, it was just two---the Administrator of the campus and the principal of St. Cecilia Academy.

This was my favorite Christmas card of the season---after my grandchildren, of course. Jackie and Greg did there own photo shoot. It turned out so darn cute. Jackie said that Evie discovered the paper inside the box and was happy to sit in it.

It is not open to the public. They take elephants from zoos and circuses and provide them with a serene environment to live out the rest of their lives.

Ornament Exchange

We had our annual Mother/Daughter ornament exchange on Thursday night. We've been doing this for 17 years now. Unfortunately, I did not get pictures of everyone, but here's what I got.

 This is such a fun party---and easy---everyone brings food.

 The kids always get a kick out of opening the ornaments and "stealing."

Counting the kids, there were 25 of us this year. We look forward to our traditions. The next one comes Saturday night---Family Trivia. Each family is a team. We each bring food and 10 questions for the competition. I'll be sure to take some pictures to share.

The Calm Before the Storm

Everything's ready---23 lb. turkey defrosting and 2 fudge pies are cooling on the counter.

 Restaurant sized can of green beans, it takes large quantities of food.

A fully stocked pantry. We definitely have enough food for the week!! Lots of cookies, home baked breads, spinach balls, mushroom crustads and cheese balls.

Now I'm crying my way through Penny Serenade. It's an old black and white movie starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunn. I've seen it a dozen times. It's funny and a tear-jerker at the same time. I'm just relaxing with my stitching before the gang arrives later this afternoon. This will be my last opportunity for calm!! Let the fun begin....

Enjoying the Season

I really enjoy making nice bows. In years past, I would make a sack full and then use them as needed. This year, I just made them as I wrapped. Lest you think ALL of my gifts look like this---they don't. The gifts for immediate family don't have any bows. Everything is just wrapped and piled under the tree.

 I had time on my hands last week, so decided to take myself to this antique mall. This is probably the best place in Nashville for reasonable prices. I'd forgotten all about it until Nancy reminded me.

This is the first time in three years that we've hauled "Nutty" around. He weighs about a hundred pounds and it takes 2 or 3 of us.

Three years ago, as Stephanie, Mindy and I were hauling him back to the garage, Mindy quipped, "I guess this makes us "The Nutty Processors!" (For those of you too young---it's a take on an old Jerry Lewis film called "The Nutty Professor." She always entertains!

The neighbor's cat visits every day and likes to sit here. You might think that this would freak me out. But just the opposite. I'm more than happy to provide "muffy, or fluffy" (Butch and I can't agree on our name for her/him) with a soft sunny spot. He/she has taken care of our squirrel problem! In fact, I've left this cushion out just for him/her. I've put the others away for the season. Of course, I really couldn't let it in the house, now could I?

I wanted to take an outside picture of our tree at night. It's kind of hard to see because of the plantation shutters. I'm going to try the one in the family room. It has colored lights, so it will probably show up better.

I found this 1950's Christmas tablecloth at the antique mall. It's going to be perfect as an overlay for our Christmas dinner. I never worry about sizes any more. I just layer them.

 I can never pass up old shelves. This one was $18.00. Nancy has some of the old bulbs in a mason jar, so I couldn't pass them up. I have ideas for the little Christmas Jello molds---for next year. I was really excited to find the old math flash cards. This year's AYM theme is "By the Numbers." I'm sure they'll come in handy. And then I just had to have the box of old brown threads. I love putting them in my class kits.

 This was my favorite find. A child's sweeper---and in PINK! Now, do I keep it, or pass it to my favorite sister? Wait, I better say "ONE" of my favorite sisters. After all, I have four! But only one shares my passion for pink!

 Here's the dilemma---I'm the Queen! What would the Queen do??

 I've never taken pictures outside at Christmas. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Fireworks never do for me. I also like how you can see the blue porch ceilings. Barely, but still...

 This one is from the street. Looks like we need to have more lights on the right and left.

 I put up this little tree in the sunroom. It's really pretty chilly in there during the winter. It's a heated room, but with windows on three sides, it's just cold. Still, from the family room, you can see in to the room, so I decided to make it a little more festive.

 Can you see what's wrong with this picture. It caused me a FTS moment---actually more than a moment---a half hour.

And here too. I could not find the plug where you would replace those little fuses. So then, I got the bright idea that I would just start trying the little bulbs. Of course, I did not have the exact ones. After undoing the wires from the bulbs to replace the little sockets, and not being able to find the spot that I took it out of, it dawned on me that the whole strand doesn't go out any more when one bulb goes out. I finally just gave up.When it's time to take it down, I'll plug them in then and throw away the bad ones. The hassle we go to for a month of festivity! Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. But then, the kids---and I mean the big ones too---have certain expectations of what grammy and grandpa's house should look like at Christmas. Can't go disappointing them.

I hope all of your Christmas plans are progressing nicely. Try not to let yourself get too stressed.

 Mary presented the challenge for this month. Use embossing---wet or dry. Use the colors, gold, orange, burgundy and green. She dry embossed her title and leaves. Her color choice was perfect for a fall layout.

 Jan did a lot of stamping and embossing. Even the postcard is stamped.

 This is the end page that Jan made for her AYM album. She used my final words to the group as her journaling. I'm honored!

 Barbie also did a fall layout. She stamped and embossed too.

 Pam embossed her little fishies that she cut on the Cricut. She made a larger one, folded it, mounted it on the edge of the page and put her journaling inside. Clever.

 Linda embossed the trims and stamped her hand cut trees. She and I both went with a Christmas theme.

My layout was about my new internet friend, Sian. I used a Versamark refill bottle to "draw" the Christmas tree and emboss it with silver. I then swiped all of the page edges and embossed them too. Inside the card is Sian's "Christmas Pudding" recipe.

The journaling reads:

It’s no secret that I am “smitten with Britain.” Little did I know that the Internet would be responsible for connecting me with a Brit! I met Sian through her blog “High in the Sky” about a year ago. I have had so much fun catching a glimpse into the everyday life of my new friend. Although it is unlikely that we will ever actually meet in person, it’s not impossible. Who knows where our travels may take us. Either which way, I get to know her a little better with each blog post.

Recently she mentioned her Christmas pudding in one of her posts. That led to an email discussion about the ingredients that I did not understand. I had never heard of vegetable suet (which is Crisco here), sultanas (which are golden raisins) and “grease proof paper” (which is parchment paper). I’m still not sure what “mixed spice” and “mixed peel” are. They say “self-raising”, we say “self-rising”. Whereas we “measure” our cups and ounces, they “weigh” theirs.  (Not to mention---minding your “P’s” and “Q’s”---which referred to keeping track of the “pints and quarts” you drank in the olden days of English pubs). We say, “pour” they say “tip”.

It has been so much fun learning the different ways we refer to things. Somehow, the way the British speak, sounds so much more refined. Regardless of how we say stuff, none of this “learnin’” (said in a southern twang) would have been possible without the Internet. It is truly a “magical thing.”

AYM 2012 Draws to a Close

I am so proud of these gals!! They started the year being new to storytelling---and some, new to scrapbooking altogether. They end the year with having found their voice. Each month I was amazed at how their writing skills improved. Really, by month 3, they all seemed to be old hat at storytelling. For some I even darn near had to set a timer during class! You know who you are!! LOL!! Better too much of the story than too little---I always say!

What a gift you are leaving for your families, but also to future generations. Who knows what life is going to be like 50 years from now? By then, anyone who happens upon your scrapbooks will be thrilled to see how we lived in 2012---and before.

As we wind down the year, the assignment for December was to tell a story about your Christmas traditions. Although many have not finished their pages, they did at least get the pictures down and the story told.

This workshop is not about design. This workshop is about finding your voice, developing your writing skills, telling your stories and preserving your photos along with their memories. My goal is to challenge with thought provoking topics---those things that might seem ordinary or not worth talking about---the every day.

Remember what I always say---"a picture may be worth a thousand words, but you need to write them down. Otherwise, they're just pictures on a pretty page. Memories from those photos---without you---are lost forever. When you write down your stories, you provide yourself with a little bit of immortality!"

I hope you all have enjoyed the ride as I have. Thanks for that.

Oh, and here's the recipe I promised. It's an "oldie" but a "goodie":

Seven Layer Dip
Layer in order:
1 can of refried beans (spread on to a platter or 9x13 dish)
16 oz. sour cream mixed with one package of taco seasoning
1 pkg. Wholly Guacamole (or you can make your own from scratch)
2 cups shredded cheddar
2 tomatoes, diced
1 can black olives, drained and chopped
1 bunch of green onions, chopped

Serve with tortilla chips or Frito scoops.

The topic this month was to think outside the box and scrapbook something for which you are grateful. The journaling was to be in a letter format.

 This was an additional layout that Jennifer made on a previous topic about our daily routines. In her journaling, she talks about starting her day in peace and ending her day that way. In between, she's crazy busy.

 Every month, Jan surprises us with her topics. This month, she's thankful that she's a quitter. She told her journey of smoking and what it took to make her quit.

 Shara was grateful to God for giving us coffee. She also added her internet finding of the discovery of the coffee bean.

 Erna showed us some naturalization documents she has from her great-grandparents. She plans to add her vintage photos of them to the layout.

 Linda N. was grateful for The Scrap Room and wrote her letter of thanks to Charon, the owner.

 Charon, ironically, also chose to be grateful for coffee. She thanked God and everyone from the coffee companies, to the creamers and coffee makers. This is the second time that she and Shara chose the exact same topic.

 Kathy wrote her thank you letter to her grandson and daughter for all the years of their hard work in the family cleaners business.

 Linda S. was grateful for modern conveniences----washing machine, stove, microwave and telephone.
